Studio Notice, Autumn Grid

We spent this week rebuilding the autumn programming grid. Not as a rebrand. Not as a "new era." Just a practical reset so the calendar makes sense. Hard yakka, as they say. I say. We say.

With Melbourne Art Fair (19–22 Feb), NotFair at Prahran (14–23 Feb), and Craft Victoria's Fresh! season running through March, the city's arts calendar is dense. We're aligning our slots so they don't fight it. Like herding cats. But the cats are events. And the events don't want to be herded.

What's Changing

  • Fewer overlapping starts on weeknights. Your correspondent has missed too many things because two good nights landed on the same Tuesday. No more. We're putting a stop to it. Or trying to.

  • More early sessions for people who cannot do midnight. Some of us have jobs. Some of us have morning jobs. The horror.

  • Clearer labels for low-volume listening events. So you know what you're walking into. No surprises. Well. Fewer surprises.

  • One open-format slot each Thursday for experiments and one-offs. The wildcard. The chaos slot. You know the one.

Why This Matters

The old grid rewarded stamina over curiosity. If you could stay out forever, you got the best parts. If you worked mornings, cared for someone, or simply wanted to get home before the last tram, you saw maybe twenty percent of what we were building.

That's not fair. It's not fair. So we're changing it. Simple as that.

Quick FAQ

Is this permanent?
No. We review monthly and keep what works. Like my nan's recipe for scones. She tweaked it for forty years. We'll tweak this for at least a month.

Are weekend blocks still chaotic?
Yes. But now chaotic on purpose. There's a difference. Trust me.

Can I pitch a format?
Absolutely. Send a one-page brief with a clear run-sheet. We'll read it. We might even reply. No promises. But we'll try.

The goal is simple: less friction, better nights, more people included in the good stuff. If that sounds naive, fine. We're trying anyway.
